Google's ranking algorithm is not a single formula — it's a multi-stage pipeline of systems that crawl, index, rank, and continuously improve search results using machine learning. Understanding how each stage works helps you identify why a page isn't ranking and what to fix.

The 4 Stages of Google's Ranking Process

1. Crawling

Googlebot discovers new URLs by following links, reading sitemaps, and processing IndexNow/API submissions. It fetches page HTML, JavaScript (in a second wave), and resources. Crawl frequency depends on domain authority and page importance.

2. Indexing

3. Ranking

For each query, Google retrieves relevant pages from the index and ranks them using hundreds of signals processed by machine learning models (primarily MUM and Gemini). The query context, user location, device, and search history all influence results.

4. Quality evaluation

Google's quality raters (contractors) evaluate search results against guidelines and provide feedback that trains the ranking models. E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) standards guide quality evaluation.
